At Greenov, weโ€™re proud to present MALO โ€“ Noise reduction using Acoustic Metamaterials for operating offshore wind turbines. This project addresses a growing environmental challenge: the continuous noise emitted by offshore wind farmsย and its impact on marine life.

As offshore wind energy becomes a key component of Franceโ€™s energy transition, itโ€™s crucial to understand and mitigate the underwater noise generated by operating turbinesโ€”a noise level comparable to that of a ship, but constant. MALOย aims to measure and reduce this noise, helping to protect marine ecosystems.

The solution developed within MALO relies on acoustic metamaterials, installed at one or several points along the turbine mast to block the propagation of vibratory waves. The goal? Limit the transmission of noise to the marine environment. Even better, this solution is designed to be retrofitted on existing turbines.

So what exactly are metamaterials? These are specially engineered materials with unique internal structures that give them unusual acoustic properties. In our case, they can create so-called band gapsโ€”frequency zones where vibrations cannot propagateโ€”allowing us to greatly reduce underwater noise pollution.

A promising innovation at the crossroads of sustainable energy and marine biodiversity preservation.

Thank you to Erwan Meteyer, Project Manager for MALO and PhD, Underwater Acoustics Engineer and Project Manager at GREENOV.
A big thank you to our project partner Metacoustic for their expertise and involvement, and to their team for making this possible: Clรฉment Lagarrigue (CEO) Damien Lecoq (R&D Associate Director) Julie Perchaud (Project Manager) Tony Merrien (Project Engineer)
Stay tuned โ€” more exciting updates on MALOย are coming soon!
